Outstanding Student Awards

Brief History:

The Outstanding Student Awards have been a tradition at HSU since 1950. It started as the "Outstanding Man and Woman of the Year" and as HSU grew and evolved, so too did the awards. Today we know it as the "Outstanding Student Awards" and it now incorporates multiple awards from Academic Excellence to Co-Curricular Achievements. These awards are one of the ways in which HSU recognizes the incredible contributions that our students make every year.

Timeline and Process:

  • December 3, 2018: Nomination Form opens
  • February 28, 2019 March 5th at 11:59 PM (extension): Nomination Form closes
  • March 6, 2019: Award committees (composed of Faculty and Staff) review submissions
  • March 25, 2019: Committees submit award recipients for each category
  • May 1, 2019: Awards ceremony for nominees, nominators, and committee members


  • Nominees must be an undergraduate student (graduate students are eligible for the CSU Research and Patricia O. McConkey awards listed below)
  • Enrolled in the 2018-2019 Academic Year
  • Must have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 for Academic awards and 2.5 for Co-Curricular awards
  • Must be in good standing with HSU
  • Must be nominated or co-nominated by at least one HSU Staff, Faculty, or Administrator 

Additional Awards:

CSU Student Researcher Competition (formerly Outstanding Student Research Award)

The CSU Student Researcher awards are awarded to the research projects selected to represent Humboldt State University in the CSU Student Research Competition. Written summaries must be submitted to the Office of Research by 5:00pm, Friday, February 15, 2019.

Patricia O. McConkey Outstanding Graduate Student Award

The Office of Academic Programs and Graduate Studies is pleased to announce the 2018-19 Patricia O. McConkey Outstanding Graduate Student Awards/Graduation with Distinction. These awards recognize the outstanding graduating student graduating with a master’s degree from each graduate program.

The deadline for submission is Friday, April 5, 2019. For more information about the award, please visit the Graduate Studies site, and to complete the submission process, click here.

Whether nominating by yourself or as part of a team, the process for submitting a nomination has changed. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the process as outlined in the guide below.
