Shamieka Kiel

Student Assistant

Biography:

I was born and raised in Eureka, always looking at Humboldt State University as the “big school over there” never thinking it would be “my school.” Now I’m almost finished with my bachelor’s degree in psychology!

I started college after high school in 2008 and shortly after I dropped out since I had no sense of direction and wanted to experience the world more. After having my son in 2016 I decided to return to school to better our lives. I started taking 1-2 classes at a time, while being a solo parent, and working full time with programs serving individuals experiencing chronic homelessness and serious mental illness. Through my work in mental health and working in my community, I’ve started to shape a career in serving people at their worst moments in life. I graduated in 2022 from College of the Redwoods with 2 associate degrees and was accepted to Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. After trying to land in Georgia, I quickly realized that my foundations were not strong and I didnt have the support that a non-traditional student with a child needs. I knew that I could return home to Humboldt where my supporters were and I could finish my bachelors here at Cal Poly Humboldt. Since then I’ve pulled back from working full time to focus on finishing school, I’ve joined the Dean of Students office, and am familiarizing myself with resources on campus and how to better support all students who are also in need of support.

I hope to further my career in the mental health field and to work with BIPOC populations who have experienced trauma. I love living in Humboldt and raising my son here, even though it isn't the same Humboldt I grew up in. Outside of school and work, you can find me spending time with my son, volunteering in the community, or going to local events. I love to draw, travel, go on nature walks, watch movies, and spend time with friends.
